The Givers: Examples of ENFJ Anime Characters

Welcome to another anime rant having to do with the Myers-Briggs personality model, the MBTI. (If you haven’t seen it, I have a post about the 16 MBTI Types As Anime Characters. Most of my character analyses look at MBTI type as well.) I don’t know why I’m so crazy over the MBTI and typing fictional characters, but it’s nothing new. I’ve been doing it since I was 16 years old, lol!

Provided first are links to pages that describe the ENFJ type. Then, a list of 15 ENFJ characters from anime is presented. Finally, you’ll see my notes concerning 5 characters from that list of 15. Please remember that typing fictional characters with 100% accuracy is impossible, since there is no way to make a character take a personality test. Because of that, many different interpretations may exist. Thus, my MBTI typing for characters isn’t necessarily “correct.” However, they are all backed up by sound arguments based on the actions and words of the character in the show.

Here are three places with decent descriptions of the ENFJ. This first one is from PersonalityPage, which I think has the most balanced description. This second one is from and their descriptions are always a little over-the-top, with romanticized versions and exaggerated positive characteristics of each type. This third one is from HumanMetrics, and it’s about as good as the first one. You may want to read one or two of the descriptions to refresh your memory on the specific characteristics of the ENFJ. They are the ones often called “Givers,” “Teachers” or “Protagonists.” The letters stand for Extraverted, Intuitive, Feeling, and Judging.

~Notes About 4 Certain Characters~

1. Shion Sonozaki

Shion’s type is difficult and debated among fans. Many believe she is an INFJ (advocate), mainly because one of her defining traits is sticking up for the underdog. (In Higurashi’s first season, Mion defends Satoshi, and in the second season, she protects Satoko.) But the truth is ENFJs and INFJs both have that trait of wanting to help the black sheep and the downtrodden. Some argue INFJ because Shion becomes obsessive, menacing, and hyper-emotional about Satoshi. It’s true she literally goes crazy over him; however, that has nothing to do with being an INFJ. It’s senseless to think INFJs are more likely than other types to become obsessive, vengeful, or evil.

Being talkative, open, friendly, and expressive with everyone, Shion definitely strikes me as an extravert. Consider how she’s able to work well at Angel Morte cafe, wearing maid outfits and serving all manner of customers. As an introvert, I could never do that. ENFJs are forgiving to a fault, while INFJs are more guarded and skeptical once hurt. This is another example showing Shion is much more of an ENFJ. She kept forgiving her family for rejecting and abusing her. She forgave Mion for helping tear off her fingernails! If not for Hinamizawa Syndrome affecting her brain, Shion probably would’ve gone on forgiving Mion and her family forever, eventually submitting to their will and returning to boarding school.

2. Kaiba / Warp

I’ve never heard/read anyone else’s opinion about Kaiba’s MBTI type. I’m completely alone here, so this typing may be wrong. Still, to me, he seems very kind and giving — at least, after his interactions with Neiro, and during his adventures traveling through space.

Outgoing, friendly, warm, and quietly expressive, Kaiba seems slightly more like an extravert than introvert. He’s a creative thinker and not very practical, suggesting intuitive nature. At times, he is very logical, but more often, Kaiba makes decisions based on his feelings. He’s driven by desire to do the right thing for Neiro’s people, and the desire to find Neiro again and be her lover. This all points to NF tendencies. Kaiba follows through, most of the time, and prefers to have a plan. Sudden changes easily throw him off. It’s most likely, therefore, that he’s an ENFJ.

3. Emma

Emma is a case of an ENFJ who is extremely determined and driven. She shows more resolution and mental/emotional strength than the average ENFJ. Compared to soft-spoken and somewhat airheaded ENFJs like Akari and Tooru, Emma’s got her head in the game. Some mistake her for an ENFP, but compared to that type, Emma is more organized, motivated, and thorough.

4. Maria Akizuki

Some of these characters, like Haru Ichinose, are “textbook” ENFJs. But some are more diverse, and you can see where they act a bit like other types from time to time. Shion has the single-minded passion of an INFJ. Akari and Tooru are both slightly more introverted than the others on the list. They are somewhat similar to INFPs. Emma could be ENTJ if she wasn’t so sensitive and considerate to the needs and feelings of others. As for Maria, she’s right on the borderline of ESFJ and ENFJ. I wouldn’t even argue with you if you preferred to think she was an ESFJ, since she’s usually much more sensory- and reality- oriented than most ENFJs. Mari could be either type, depending on how you analyze her character.

~Final Note: One More ENFJ Character to Mention~

Hailing from Attack on Titan, Historia Reiss/ Kristina Lenz is a fantastic example of an ENFJ. By the time I thought about Historia, I had already compiled 15 others, and didn’t want to remove any of them. This note also explains the cover image. Long live Queen Historia! 😀

Thank you so much for reading my work today! It means a lot. Have a safe and happy day!

    1. Hi it’s good to hear from you. Thanks for all the recent comments. 🙂 I’m glad you liked this post. Some say Otonashi would be ESFJ, but I think he’s slightly more of an ENFJ. And yes, I really love MariMite. It’s not thrilling, that’s for sure, but it’s a wonderful slice of life show about the relationships between the girls.

      1. Sure thing, 7mononoke! I’m glad we can have some dialogue about your posts. Yeah, I can see the argument both ways with Otanashi. MariMite was a slow burner, but I thought what I saw was decent from a storytelling and character standpoint.
